Creative Writing Classes in Derby

Saturday 6 July, 10.00am to 3.45pm- Getting Started: Beginning Fiction with Emma Henderson
One day creative writing workshop
In this workshop, suitable for both the total beginner and for writers who have already begun but are unsure of where they’re going, the focus is on inspiration – where do our stories come from and why do we write?  Also on practical ways of turning that inspiration into writing, with many short exercises, aimed at releasing writers’ inhibition, broadening notions of sources of creativity and providing the skills necessary to the craft of writing. Awareness of genre and the various elements of fiction will be taught in a fun, participatory way. By the end of the workshop, everyone will have completed at least two short pieces of writing that they would consider worth developing further.
Emma Henderson was born in London and educated at the universities of Oxford, Yale and London. She worked for a few years as a blurbs’ writer for Penguin Books, and for many years as a teacher of English in London comprehensive schools and further education institutions. More recently, she has been a lecturer in creative writing at City University. She also spent six years, 1999 – 2005, living in the French Alps, running a ski and snowboard lodge.
Emma’s first novel, Grace Williams Says It Loud, was shortlisted for many prizes, including the Orange Prize for Fiction, 2011. It was runner-up for the MIND Book of the Year Award, chosen as a Summer Read for the TV Bookclub and won the McKitterick Prize. She is nearing completion of her second novel.
